Product detailed description
Coffee from Baroida Estate is one of our long-standing favorites and returns regularly thanks to its popularity. Papua New Guinea may still be a lesser-known coffee origin for many, but the Eastern Highlands region has long ranked among the country’s top-quality areas. The farm was founded in the 1960s by Ben Colbran and is now run by his son Nichol. The name “Baroida” comes from a local spirit believed to live in a large rock in the middle of the river that flows through the farm. The rock is said to withstand even the strongest floods.
Cultivation is challenging due to the high level of rainfall, which is why drainage channels were built between the rows. The varieties grown here include Typica, Bourbon, Arusha, and Mundo Novo. After hand-picking, the cherries are carefully sorted and then dried using the natural process on raised beds.
The result is a highly fermented, very aromatic coffee with notes of banana, macadamia nut, and praline. The body is creamy with a pleasantly sweet finish. This coffee works well both as a filter and as an espresso.
The beans are naturally slightly darker due to their high sugar content and darken more quickly during roasting. For brewing, we recommend lowering the water temperature by a few degrees or grinding slightly coarser.
